Today I had a family day trip to the Michoacan Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, El Rosario. During winter, hundreds of thousands of Monarch butterflies travel from the south of Canada to Michoacan Mexico, getting to see so many butterflies is such an amazing experience.
After a two and a half hour drive we arrived to Ocampo, Michoacan, where the ‘El Rosario’ Sanctuary is located. You can book a tour once you are there or you can go by yourself, for this trip we decided to visit it on our own.
We walked nearly two kilometers uphill through the woods and up the mountain until we arrived to the gorgeous sanctuary, it was a beautiful sight to see so many butterflies flying around or standing together in trees.
For this trip is recommended to wear comfortable clothes:
- A pair of hiking tennis or boots are great for this.
- Wear layers, a warm shirt, a warm sweater and a rainproof jacket in case it rains.
- Take a small backpack with you, as you hike it gets hot so you may want to take off your jacket or sweater.
At the end of our hike we had some food before heading back home. There are a lot of places to eat some quesadillas, sopes and other delicious mexican dishes.
If you ever have the opportunity to come to Mexico from January to March you have to take the time and watch Monarch butterfly at this sanctuary, it’s such a beautiful view you won’t regret it. x
